A Salvadoran Woman Tells Her Story of the Devil and God, Bitterness and Hope

A deeply spiritual Salvadoran girl forges a path through endless violence and shocking poverty. Through ardent faith she overcomes a lifetime of trauma.

People like Milagros almost never write memoirs: they generally die too young. Half Indigenous Pipil and half Spanish Creole, she grew up in a shantytown above San Salvador during the brutal civil war that raged from 1979 to 1992, and made a life for herself during the gang war that followed. Then the danger to her family became too great.

A forthcoming book by Milagros Vela and Rita Moran
